Rob Burrow: Leeds Rhinos and England star dies after MND battle

Former Leeds Rhinos and England rugby league star Rob Burrow has died at the age of 41 after a long battle with motor neurone disease (MND)

The 2008 World Cup winner was diagnosed with the neurological disorder in 2019 after experiencing weakness in his right leg, tripping and slurred speech.

Despite undergoing treatment, Burrow's condition deteriorated over time and he required the use of a wheelchair and ventilator to assist with his breathing.

He died peacefully in hospital on Sunday, surrounded by his family and friends.

Burrow's death has been met with an outpouring of grief from the sporting world and beyond, with many paying tribute to his courage and determination in the face of such a devastating illness.

In a statement, his family said: "We are heartbroken to announce the passing of our beloved Rob Burrow. Rob was a true legend, both on and off the field."

"He was an inspiration to us all, and his spirit will live on through his incredible work with the MND Association."

"Burrow's diagnosis with MND shocked the sporting world, but he refused to let the disease define him."

"He continued to live his life to the fullest, raising awareness of MND and inspiring others with his positive attitude."

"His death is a huge loss to the sporting world, but his legacy will live on through the lives he touched."

"Rob Burrow was a true warrior, and he will never be forgotten."
